The ongoing recovery process in the Tigray region of Ethiopia presents an opportunity to address the educational gaps faced by children who were displaced during the conflict between November 2020 and November 2022. Many of these children missed out on formal schooling and now face challenges in catching up. Every Person Every Place (EP2) is launching a 10 month Accelerated Learning Program for 25 internally displaced children, in partnership with the Luminos Fund, a global leader in accelerated learning. This pilot project aims to help these children regain their education and transition smoothly into regular schools, offering both educational support and mid-day meals, which will also benefit the local economy by sourcing food from local suppliers.
Accelerated Learning: To provide an intensive curriculum aimed at helping 25 children catch up on missed schooling within a 10 month period.
Nutritional Support: To ensure that each child receives one nutritious mid-day meal, sourced from local suppliers, fostering health and supporting the local market.
Transition to Regular School: To prepare and support children in re-entering the formal school system by the end of the program.
Community Empowerment: To work closely with local educators, families, and community leaders, ensuring sustained community engagement and long-term educational success.
Accelerated Learning Curriculum:
Mid-Day Meal Program:
Daily nutritious meals will be served at mid-day, sourced from local suppliers. This not only ensures that children are well-fed but also stimulates the local economy by supporting small farmers and vendors in the area.
Teacher Training and Support:
Teachers will undergo specialized training in accelerated learning techniques and student mentoring to ensure high-quality instruction and student development.
Parental and Community Involvement:
Regular workshops and meetings will be held with parents and community members to keep them informed of the students’ progress and foster a supportive learning environment.
By the end of the 10 month pilot project:
Educational Advancement: All 25 students will have completed the accelerated learning curriculum, closing critical gaps in their education.
School Transition: At least 80% of students are expected to successfully transition into regular schools, supported by individual assessments and readiness programs.
Nutritional Impact: The mid-day meal program will have provided the children with essential nutrition, improving their ability to focus and learn, while also stimulating the local economy by sourcing from local suppliers.
Community Benefits: Local teachers will have gained new skills in accelerated learning, and community engagement will have strengthened local support for education.
The pilot project will serve as a foundation for scaling the program across other IDP sites in Ethiopia. The insights gained will guide the development of larger programs aimed at helping more displaced children transition back into formal education, with a continued focus on local partnerships, sustainable food sourcing, and community empowerment.
